Instagram Now Lets Users Rearrange Their Profile Grid

One of the most requested Instagram features in years is finally here: you can now manually rearrange the posts on your profile grid, instead of being locked into the order you originally published them in. Until this update, the only way to control what appeared first on your profile was pinning up to three posts to the top; everything else stayed frozen in reverse chronological order. That restriction is gone.

How to do it

The feature is simple to use once it appears on your account. Go to your profile, tap and hold any post or Reel in your grid, and select "Reorder Grid" from the menu that pops up. From there, long-press and drag posts into whatever order you want. Changes save immediately and are visible to anyone who visits your profile right away. It works on both posts and Reels, and also applies to carousel and collaborative posts, though archived posts aren't included.

Why this actually helps you

This isn't just a cosmetic toggle, it changes how much control you have over your own first impression. You can now move your strongest content to the top without deleting and reposting it (which used to be the only workaround, and it cost you all your existing likes and comments). That makes it much easier to refresh your aesthetic, spotlight a specific project, retire outdated posts from prime position, or simply put your best work in front of new visitors, all while keeping your original engagement intact.

A few things to know before you start reordering

  • Rearranging your grid does not change a post's original publish date, and it doesn't affect its reach or engagement history.
  • New posts you publish going forward will still land at the top of the grid (after any pinned posts), following normal chronological order.
  • There's currently no one-tap way to reset your grid back to fully chronological order, so plan your layout with some intention.
  • Followers won't get a notification when you rearrange your grid, so you can experiment freely.
  • The rollout is happening in phases, so if you don't see the option yet, make sure your app is updated and check back in a few days.

Practical tip: before you start dragging things around, scroll through your grid and make a mental (or written) list of your three to six strongest posts. Move those into the top rows first, since that's what most profile visitors actually see before they decide whether to keep scrolling or follow you.

I play video games very badly and write even worse. Luckily, with a sufficient dose of caffeine and the right motivation, I am able to sow doubt about the worthiness of my skills for at least another month. Somewhere along the way, I also started spending an unhealthy amount of time researching Instagram — not just the surface-level stuff, but the numbers, patterns, user behavior, algorithm signals, engagement shifts, and the weird little details that decide why one post disappears and another one takes off. I dig into scientific studies, platform data, marketing reports, and real-world statistics to understand how Instagram actually works, from follower behavior to reach, from likes and comments to Reels performance. So when I am not failing spectacularly at video games, I am probably analyzing Instagram trends, reading research, or turning boring statistics into something people can actually use.
